Lesson 1
What You'll Learn:Expressing desires and purposes
Learn to express your wishes using "~ga hoshii desu" (I want ~) and "~tai desu" (I want to ~). You can also convey purposes with "~ni ikimasu" (go to ~). You'll be able to ask "doko e ikitai desu ka" (where do you want to go?) and answer "Nihon e asobi ni ikitai desu" (I want to go to Japan for fun)!
Lesson 2
What You'll Learn:Naming objects
Learn to distinguish between "kore" (this), "sore" (that), and "are" (that over there), and ask and answer questions about things around you like "nan desu ka" (what is it?) and "dare no desu ka" (whose is it?). You can also express possession with "kono ~ wa ~ no desu." You'll be able to order at restaurants and shop smoothly!
Lesson 3
What You'll Learn:Expressing permission, prohibition, states, and habits
Ask for permission with "~te mo ii desu" (may I ~?), express prohibition with "~te wa ikemasen" (must not ~), and explain current states or habits with "~te imasu." You'll be able to ask for permission like "koko de shashin o totte mo ii desu ka" (may I take photos here?) and convey current situations like "Nihongo o benkyō shite imasu" (I'm studying Japanese)!
Lesson 4
What You'll Learn:Connecting sentences
Connect actions in sequence with "~te, ~te" and express "after ~" with "~te kara." Connect adjectives to describe multiple characteristics like "yasashikute, kakkoii desu" (kind and cool). You'll be able to convey plans and schedules in detail!
Lesson 5
What You'll Learn:Expressing negative requests, obligations, and permissions
Politely request prohibition with "~naide kudasai" (please don't ~), express obligation with "~nakereba narimasen" (must ~), and indicate unnecessity with "~nakute mo ii desu" (don't have to ~). You'll be able to reassure others with "shinpai shinaide kudasai" (please don't worry) and convey your obligations with "shukudai o shinakereba narimasen" (I must do homework)!
Lesson 6
What You'll Learn:Expressing abilities and hobbies, using "before"
Express abilities with "~koto ga dekimasu" (can ~), introduce hobbies with "shumi wa ~koto desu" (my hobby is ~), and explain temporal relationships with "~mae ni" (before ~). You'll be able to share more about yourself with expressions like "Nihongo o hanasu koto ga dekimasu" (I can speak Japanese) and "neru mae ni hon o yomimasu" (I read books before sleeping)!
Lesson 7
What You'll Learn:Expressing experiences, changes, and listing multiple examples
Talk about experiences with "~ta koto ga arimasu" (have done ~), list multiple examples with "~tari ~tari shimasu," and express changes with "~ku narimasu/ni narimasu" (become ~). You'll be able to richly express your experiences with phrases like "Nihon e itta koto ga arimasu" (I have been to Japan) and "eiga o mitari kaimono shitari shimasu" (I watch movies, go shopping, etc.)!
Lesson 8
What You'll Learn:Speaking in plain form
Learn to use not only polite form but also plain form (casual form). Master the natural way of speaking used in conversations with friends and family. You'll be able to communicate more naturally with expressions like "kondo issho ni ikanai?" (wanna go together next time?) and "dō datta?" (how was it?)!
Lesson 9
What You'll Learn:Expressing opinions and reconfirmation
Express your opinions and thoughts with "~to omoimasu" (I think ~), quote someone's words with "~to iimasu," and seek confirmation with "~deshō?" (right?). You'll be able to have deeper communication with phrases like "Nihon no ryōri wa oishii to omoimasu" (I think Japanese food is delicious) and "Nihon wa ii tokoro deshō?" (Japan is a nice place, right?)!
Lesson 10
What You'll Learn:Using relative clauses
Learn to describe nouns in detail using verbs. Make more specific and detailed expressions like "sensei ga dashita shukudai" (the homework the teacher assigned) and "taberu jikan" (time to eat). You'll be able to convey experiences in detail, such as "kinō tabeta ryōri wa totemo oishikatta desu" (the food I ate yesterday was very delicious)!
Lesson 11
What You'll Learn:Expressing "when" and giving directions or usage instructions
Explain time or situations with "~toki" (when ~) and express conditions with "~to" (if/when ~). You'll be able to give directions and explain how to use things with phrases like "gakusei no toki, yoku asobimashita" (when I was a student, I often played) and "asoko o magaru to, konbini ga arimasu" (when you turn over there, there's a convenience store). Life in Japan becomes more convenient!
Lesson 12
What You'll Learn:Expressing doing for others and receiving favors
Learn to express what someone did for you or what you did for someone using "~te kuremasu" (do for me), "~te moraimasu" (receive favor), and "~te agemasu" (do for someone). You'll be able to speak with gratitude using expressions like "obāchan ga tsukutte kuremashita" (grandma made it for me) and "tomodachi ni oshiete moraimashita" (my friend taught me)!
Lesson 13
What You'll Learn:Expressing (if) ~tara and ~temo
Express hypotheses or conditions with "~tara" (if ~) and express concession with "~temo" (even if ~). You'll be able to communicate more flexibly using conditional and concessive expressions like "ii tenki dattara, Fujisan ni noborimashō" (if the weather is good, let's climb Mt. Fuji) and "ame demo, dekakemasu" (even if it rains, I'll go out). You've now perfected the beginner level!
